Klepu - Furniture Craft

If we come into Klepu area, which is located on Temuwuh village, Dlingo, Bantul, about 20 kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta City, we will look teak-wall traditional houses. Their house model is Joglo where in front of house there is kentongan (a tool usually beaten to inform theft) made of teak. And you should not be surprised if there is no teen that is only sitting on a pedestrian like at big cities is.


In this region that consists of 154 heads of family, most of them work as furniture craft maker. They rely on this wood basic business as their living. People, who are 15 years old up to the old, are skilled-well to make furniture craft products. “Their ability is from their ancestors, because when my grandfathers were still alive, they had become furniture craft makers, Subowo, who is a success worker says.


Products made by crafters from Klepu are cupboard, bookshelf, table, chair, studying table, computer desk, buffet, and bed. The price is regarded cheaper than from other region. It ranges Rp 15.000,- to Rp 500.000,-, depends on type of product, wood that is used, model and measurement. Type of wood that is often used by the crafters is wood of sonokeling, sengon laut, mahoni, durian, jackfruit, munggur and teak. “The crafters here can also receive order, about shape and design, buyers may bring their own design,” Sinambi, the head of Klepu sub village says.

His dwelling place is also as a production place and for selling his products. According to Subowo, in this time, types of bookshelf and studying table are more sellable than other types of product. Most buyers are student, college student and boardinghouse people. “For type of bookshelf and studying table, those are very sellable when new lesson comes. In a day, 50 pieces can be sold while the price for a single piece rates Rp 30.000,-,” Purwanto, who is also as a crafter says. Craft products made in Klepu have spread over Indonesia, especially to the big cities. Some of them have even spread to some Asia countries, such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
